AIS mismatch? How to check your AIS against your ITR and fix differences

Updated 23 September 2026

Your Annual Information Statement (AIS) lists what banks, employers, brokers, tenants and others have reported about you for the year. The income tax department checks your return against it, so any income in AIS that's missing from your return can be added when it's processed or lead to a notice. Check it before you file.

How do I download my AIS?

  1. Log in to incometax.gov.in.
  2. Open Annual Information Statement (AIS) from the Services menu and choose the financial year.
  3. The Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) shows a total for each category; AIS shows each entry. Download either as a PDF. The password is your PAN in lower case followed by your date of birth (DDMMYYYY).

Why does my AIS show more income than I have?

  • Deposit interest you haven't received: interest on a cumulative FD is taxable every year as it builds up, and banks report it that way.
  • Accounts you forgot: old savings accounts, joint accounts where you're the first holder, or a second employer.
  • Sale of shares and mutual funds: AIS shows the sale value, not your gain. Report the gain, worked out from your purchase cost.
  • Duplicates or someone else's income: the same interest reported twice, or an entry against the wrong PAN.

How do I correct wrong information in AIS?

Open the entry in AIS and use the feedback option next to it. Pick the reason, such as "Information is correct", "Information is not fully correct" (and give the right amount), "Information is duplicate" or "Information belongs to another person". The reporting entity is asked to confirm or correct it. You can file your return with the correct figures without waiting; keep your own proof.

What if AIS shows less than my records?

That's fine. AIS only contains what others reported, so it's often incomplete. Report your full, correct income. The exception is TDS: you can only claim tax credits that appear in Form 26AS or AIS, so ask anyone whose deduction is missing to file or correct their TDS return.

Frequently asked questions

What is the password for the AIS PDF?
Your PAN in lower case followed by your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format, for example abcde1234f01011980.
Can I file my ITR if AIS shows wrong information?
Yes. Submit feedback on the wrong entry in AIS, then file your return with the correct figures and keep proof in case the department asks.
Why does AIS show interest I haven't received?
Banks report interest as it's earned on your deposits, including on cumulative FDs that pay out at maturity. That interest is taxable every year.
