Frequently asked questions
- What documents do I need to file my ITR?
- PAN linked with Aadhaar, a pre-validated bank account, your AIS and Form 26AS, Form 16 if you're salaried, interest certificates, capital gains statements if you sold investments, and proofs for any old-regime deductions. Business owners also need their receipts or accounts.
- Do I need to e-verify my income tax return?
- Yes. A return must be verified within 30 days of filing, usually with an Aadhaar OTP or net banking. Until then it's treated as not filed.
- What is the fee for filing an ITR late?
- Up to ₹5,000, or ₹1,000 if your total income is up to ₹5 lakh. Filing late also means you can't carry forward most losses to later years.
