Frequently asked questions
- Do I need rent receipts to claim HRA?
- Your employer usually asks for them as proof of rent before allowing the HRA exemption in your salary TDS. Even if they don't, keep them in case the income tax department asks. HRA can only be claimed in the old tax regime.
- When is the landlord's PAN required for HRA?
- When the rent you pay is more than ₹1 lakh a year (about ₹8,333 a month). Without it, your employer may not allow the exemption. If the landlord has no PAN, a signed declaration from them is usually accepted.
- Is a revenue stamp needed on a rent receipt?
- Only when the rent is paid in cash and the receipt is for more than ₹5,000. The landlord signs across the stamp. Receipts for bank transfers, UPI or cheques don't need one.
- Can I make rent receipts for the whole year at once?
- Yes. Choose the start and end months and whether you want one receipt per month, per quarter or for the whole period, then print them or save them as a PDF.
