Frequently asked questions
- What is the format of a GSTIN?
- 15 characters: a 2-digit state code, the business's 10-character PAN, an entity number (1 for the first registration in that state), the letter Z, and a check character calculated from the others.
- Does a valid GSTIN mean the business is registered?
- Not necessarily. A correct format and check digit catch typing mistakes and made-up numbers, but only the GST portal can confirm that a registration is active. Use 'Search Taxpayer' on gst.gov.in to check its status.
- How do I find the PAN from a GSTIN?
- Characters 3 to 12 of a GSTIN are the holder's PAN. The 4th character of the PAN shows the type of holder, such as P for an individual, C for a company or F for a firm.
