FSSAI Registration – Who is required to Register?
The FSSAI requires everyone operating in the food industry, from hawkers to home vendors to giant food chains. The FSSAI requires you to register regardless of whether you operate online or offline, if you import or export food products, or if you are a local player. They must obtain one of the three types of registration or license that are discussed below, depending on their size and where they operate.
You need a food licence if you are operating a business in any of the following categories:

FSSAI Registration : Types of FSSAI Licence in India
Under the FSSAI Act, 2006, all food businesses must be registered/licensed in one of three categories:
FSSAI Registration – Basic
For businesses that have small turnovers – up to 12 lakhs approximately per year – this is the most commonly used kind of registration
Note: State licences are required for catering businesses regardless of their turnover, not a basic FSSAI registration.
FSSAI State Licence
It is mandatory for companies with a profit of over 12 lakhs to be licensed by the state.
FSSAI Central Licence
It is for large businesses with an annual turnover of more than 20 crores that are required to register for central licence
Food suppliers to government offices/departments, importers and exporters, online platforms, franchisees, and chains of hotels/restaurants also require a central license.
FSSAI Registration : Documents Required
Different types of registration require different documents depending on the type of business.
FSSAI Registration
- Passport-sized photograph of the authorized person [self-attested]
- Aadhar card front and back [self-attested] of authorized person
- Proof of business address [rental agreement, previous month’s electricity bill, landlord’s NOC]
- A signed declaration from the authorized person
State & Central Licence
- A passport-sized photograph of the directors/partners/proprietors
- Identification proof for directors, partners, and proprietors [Aadhar and PAN]
- Business address proof [rental agreement/last month’s electricity bill/NOC from landlord]
- Photographs of the premises (8 to 9 photos)
- The blueprint for the premises
- A list of food products on the letterhead of the company [signed and sealed]
- On the company’s letterhead (with seal and signature), list the machines (if any).
Manufacturing Units
In addition to the above-mentioned documents, manufacturing units have to submit the following documents as well:
- A blueprint for a warehouse, plant, etc.
- The list of all machinery
- A report of a water test
